Sweco Engineering engineers prepared, on behalf of the Road and Bridge Management in Lublin, the full design documentation for the reconstruction of the intersection of Solidarności Avenue, Sikorskiego Avenue and Gen. B. Ducha Street in Lublin with the construction of a viaduct, footbridges, retaining walls and acoustic screens. Also, a dense network of foreign devices was rebuilt. The investment was made to improve the safety of the intersection, and to increase the capacity of the intersection, which will improve transportation in the city and the comfort of its residents.
Reconstruction of the intersection of Solidarności Avenue, Sikorskiego Avenue and Gen. B. Ducha Street in Lublin
Road and Bridge Management in Lublin
Start design work: 2012
End design work: 2015
End of investment: 2017
This extremely busy intersection is located in Lublin and is the intersection of the DK12, DK17 and DK19 national roads.
Our engineers designed the reconstruction of the existing one-level intersection into a two-level intersection with the central island under the viaduct, along with switchboards and traffic lights as well as the reconstruction of Sikorskiego Avenue, Gen. B. Ducha Street and Północna Street. The proposed solutions allow for the creation of a collision-free passage of vehicles on Solidarności Avenue. Other directions, like Sikorskiego Avenue and Gen. B. Ducha Street, are implemented through a link, a central island and excellent traffic light signaling. Północna Street was incorporated into Gen. B. Ducha Street at a distance of 280 meters from Solidarności Avenue, which improved the safety of traffic.
An important component of the entire investment was the engineering construction. Construction of a two-level intersection and the elevation of Solidarności Avenue over the central island entailed the necessity of constructing a 100-meter, long two-lane viaduct, accompanied by long road incursions, closed in both sides of the retaining walls. In addition, due to the reconstruction of Północna Street and the need to enter the area of Czechowskie Hills along the newly formed section of Północna Street, a retaining wall approximately 170 meters long of and a maximum height of 10 meters was needed.
Due to the location of the intersection in the vicinity of housing, the construction of a footbridge, along with ramps adjusted to the needs of disabled people, is planned for Solidarności Avenue.
Every project in a highly urbanized area is an organizational and logistic challenge. In this case, to reduce the inconvenience of transportation into the city, design solutions and construction technology had to ensure the continuity of traffic on the reconstructed intersection.
It was all the more complicated that the location of the intersection in the area of the Czechówka River proglacial valley was connected with the necessity of a foundational structure on the ground with low load-bearing capacity.
In relation to this, under the surface of the high access embankments to the viaduct, a project of deep ground reinforcement was developed.
These works, carried out at the intersection, required the development of a precise time schedule and the use of maximum caution.
The project was started in May 2012. The investment was completed in October 2017.
